What’s going on in the RNN world
RNN DIGITAL: Snap Maps & Specs
The Snapchat phenomenon continues to grow and branch out with new features, the most recent of which is Snap Maps. The app launched the new feature last month and will allow location-sharing and location-based content discovery via the Snap Map feature.
The intent of the app is to encourage real life interaction and meet up with friends by allowing users to see where their contacts are and inspire people to get out and be adventurous, but the app has met some controversy with objections being raised by schools, parents and even police surrounding the dangers that could arise from users sharing their location information so freely. However, the feature does include a ‘Ghost Mode’ option in settings which will allow users to opt out of location- sharing and your location will only be updated when you open and use the app, so it’s down to the user how often they wish to share the information.
In other Snapchat news, Snapchat spectacles are now available in the UK & Ireland. “How do they work?” I hear you ask! Well, once wearing the Spectacles, the user taps the side of the frames which prompts the recording of a 10 second video clip that is added to your Snapchat story. The idea behind the lenses is that the 115-degree field of vision and the positioning of the glasses provide an image or view much closer to actual eyesight, for a “more authentic” memory than the pictures you can take on your smartphone.
